Remember to be a smart purchaser! Carefully read all labels and packaging so that the product you purchase is in fact the one you want, and this applies to your purchase of ear tags and electronic identification (EID) tags.

To be official, tags must be imprinted with the animal identification number (AIN, 15-digit number starting with 840), the official US ear tag Shield, the phrase, ‘UNLAWFUL TO REMOVE’ and the manufacturer’s logo or trademark.

Wisconsin Livestock Extension buyer beware notice about official ear tag requirements with ID number, US shield, "unlawful to remove" text, and manufacturer logo

Many agricultural retailers sell EID tags – but not all offer official tags from approved manufacturers; therefore, the tags you purchase may not be official – and may not be valid for use when official identification is required. To be official, tags must be imprinted with the animal identification number (AIN, 15-digit number starting with 840), the official US ear tag Shield, the phrase, ‘UNLAWFUL TO REMOVE’ and the manufacturer’s logo or trademark. WLIC is an approved vendor, selling official ear tags from an approved manufacturer.

Official tags from any of the approved manufacturers on this list can also be purchased:
