Introduction

Rusty Burgett, former National Sheep Improvement Program Program Director, explains Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) and their role in genetic selection, how to apply EBVs in selection for seed stock and commercial producers, and the role genomics can/will play in sheep genetic selection. Contact Carolyn Ihde to discuss NSIP or to learn more about the program.

About this video

During this Small Ruminant Webinar, Rusty Burgett, sheep producer and long‑time user of the National Sheep Improvement Program (NSIP), discussed how genetic selection tools can be used to make more informed breeding decisions in commercial and seedstock flocks. The presentation focused on translating genetic data into practical management decisions that improve productivity, efficiency, and long‑term flock performance.

Burgett explained how NSIP Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) provide producers with information beyond what can be seen phenotypically, allowing for more accurate comparison between animals across flocks, years, and environments. He emphasized that genetic progress is cumulative and permanent, making sire selection one of the most impactful decisions producers make. The webinar also addressed common misconceptions about NSIP and highlighted how flocks of all sizes can benefit from participation.

The session concluded by encouraging producers to align genetic selection goals with their production systems and markets, rather than selecting for single traits in isolation. By using NSIP data alongside sound management and recordkeeping, producers can improve traits such as growth, maternal performance, and overall efficiency while maintaining structural soundness and adaptability.

Key Points

  • Genetic selection drives long‑term, permanent improvement in flock performance
  • NSIP EBVs allow comparison of animals across flocks and environments
  • Phenotype alone does not reliably predict genetic merit
  • Sire selection has an outsized influence on genetic progress
  • Selection goals should align with production system and market targets
  • NSIP can be used effectively by both commercial and seedstock producers
