Introduction

Mineral nutrition plays an essential role in flock productivity, ewe health, and long‑term sustainability, yet many producers struggle to balance cost with effectiveness. Strategic and Cost‑Effective Mineral Nutrition for Sheep provides producers with practical guidance on choosing, evaluating, and managing mineral programs that support animal health without unnecessary expense.

In this webinar, Dr. Whit Stewart discusses how mineral needs change throughout the year and how producers can tailor their program based on forage quality, regional deficiencies, and stage‑of‑production requirements. He explains that while commercial mineral mixes vary widely, a strategic approach helps producers avoid both overspending and under‑supplying key nutrients. By understanding how mineral intake affects immunity, reproduction, and growth, producers can make better decisions to protect flock performance.

Dr. Stewart highlights the importance of evaluating on‑farm forage and using test results to guide supplementation rather than relying on generic formulations. He discusses how fluctuations in pasture mineral composition—especially during drought, rapid pasture growth, or winter feeding—can influence ewe requirements. He also stresses the value of selecting minerals appropriate for sheep to avoid toxicity risks such as excessive copper.

The session also addresses common challenges producers face when managing mineral access, including variable intake in pasture systems, competition in group settings, and environmental factors that reduce consumption. Dr. Stewart reviews options for improving consistency, such as targeted placement of mineral feeders, seasonal adjustments, and monitoring consumption over time.

Overall, this webinar equips producers with the knowledge to build a more efficient mineral program—one that boosts flock health, supports reproduction, and remains economically sustainable.

Objectives

  • Understand the role of minerals in supporting sheep health and productivity.
  • Identify how forage quality and regional deficiencies influence mineral needs.
  • Select mineral supplements that match flock requirements without unnecessary cost.
  • Recognize management practices that improve mineral intake consistency.
