Introduction
Many people with small poultry flocks and backyard chickens struggle to find a veterinarian which will take chickens as patients. Unfortunately, this often becomes an urgent problem when the chickens are sick.
Here are a few suggestions which may help in the search.
Local Extension Office
If there is a 4-H or agricultural agent in your county’s Extension office, they may be familiar with local veterinarians. They often have access to a wealth of information about proper management and care as well.
Social Media
There are often local groups of chicken fanciers on Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms. Members of these groups will likely know of veterinarians in the area which will see chickens. There may even be veterinarians on these sites!
Local Farm Store or Feed Store
Workers at your local farm store or local feed store may know of contacts in the area, as they likely talk to others who are buying feed and other poultry products. They may also offer an information board to post questions, contacts, etc.
Call and Ask
It can be time-consuming, but calling veterinary clinics may be necessary to find one which will see chickens.
Summary
It is best to be proactive and make a connection with a veterinarian before the chickens are sick. Having a veterinarian for your chickens can save precious time in emergency situations.
*Note: Federal rules require a veterinarian / client relationship before any prescriptions can be written. If this relationship is already in place, it could expedite things when urgent care is needed.
